What is behavioral design? It's a systematic, process-driven approach focused on creating behavior change. In this video, Samuel Salzer, a behavioral design expert, explores the core principles and key components of this fascinating field, bridging insights from behavioral science, behavioral economics, and design. Whether you're a UX designer or someone curious about behavior change, this talk provides a valuable perspective on how to think like a behavioral designer.

Samuel explains how behavioral design combines elements from neuroscience, decision science, psychology, and sociology with the principles of user-centered design to create meaningful, lasting impact. Designers, especially those with backgrounds in UX design or interaction design, are uniquely positioned to excel in behavioral design thanks to their foundational skills. Samuel highlights concepts like the endowed progress effect, which taps into human psychology to drive engagement, and emphasizes the importance of understanding the context when designing for behavior change.

Through examples like optimizing onboarding processes, Samuel shows how behavioral design isn’t about quick fixes but about embracing a thoughtful, research-driven process. By leveraging tools like changing defaults and studying user behavior within specific environments, designers can fine-tune solutions that truly work. However, the success of these tools ultimately depends on deeply understanding the product, the users, and the surrounding context. This video is perfect for those looking to deepen their understanding of behavioral design, sharpen their user-centered design skills, or gain actionable insights into building better user experiences. Whether you’re a member of the Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF), a UX professional, or simply intrigued by behavioral science, this talk offers practical knowledge to help you design for meaningful behavior change.
